CARMELITE FRIARS NORTH AMERICAN PROVINCE OF SAINT ELIAS

HABIT

As an ancient religious order, the Carmelite Friars have an approved distinctive garment known as a religious habit. Consisting of a brown tunic, scapular, hood, black cincture, and a white cloak. As Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the habit signifies our devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, especially the Brown Scapular. The white cloak worn on special occasions signifies our Spiritual Father, Elijah the prophet, and the color white of the cloak signifies the purity of Mary. The Carmelite  Habit is given when one enters the novitiate. After the novitiate year when one takes their simple vows the white cloak is given.
